Looking At The History Of Pens And Their Eventual Modern Designs

By Dave Shuttle

In the beginning, there was a finger dipped in vegetable juices, smearing the stuff on cave walls. These might be found in odd places throughout the world, depicting the daily lives of those doing the art work. Eventually they came up with other ideas for creating these word pictures, such as using small animal bones and eventually metal tools. Far in the future, brush pens made of rat or camel hair found their way to the hands of writers and artists.

Bamboo was available in most Asian countries, so it would be only natural for those from the Asiatic countries to eventually find that the sharp end of bamboo dipped in some type of liquid would produce markings. The monks of European countries found that goose quills were ideal for creating their texts and doing their artwork.

Just think what could have been accomplished by the writers of long ago if they had the use of the tools now modernly used. Even the pen holding ink in its own barrel was not created until the late nineteenth century. Their works were finished under much more dire writing conditions than found today.

Pen, pencil and paper appear to go together like peanut butter and jelly. They can be used separately for different reasons, but are inseparable in our minds. These writing tools can be used in crafts with a variety of types and styles of tips, from felt to gel. Calligraphy pens are very specialized in their use, being used to create the most exquisite missives. Wedding and other special announcements are often created by hand in this way, for a special touch.

The many types of pens began with the lowly fountain pen, followed by the seeming miracle ballpoint. Roller ball instruments were introduced along with the gel and suddenly the retractable pen. Fountain pens were used, and still are, by those wishing to have their handwriting beautiful and flowing. Something about the tip of that pen just lends itself to ebbless and continuous cursive.

Used at home, in the office or at school, pens and pencils may be difficult to live without. Casual and interesting types of these writing instruments used by folks in a home setting could be of any nature. Jotting down items on lists, producing letters to mail to friends and family sans computer, pens can be of any type. Some people who are afflicted with arthritis or have other hand injuries, may find the thicker, fatter kind of pen easier to hold onto. A rainbow of colors may be utilized as well. Even students express themselves with purples, pinks and yellows.

The yellow highlighter pen has expanded its horizons by making itself available in other colors now as well. As long as the print can be seen through the ink, it can be used to mark special passages in books and on papers.

The pen will probably never disappear. It is probably here to stay. Just think about all the modern technology that has come about since the first caveman dipped his finger in berry juice. It has been, and will be in the future, pens and pencils other kinds of writing papers for our use, created because of our needs. There was even a skyscraper built in Riyadh, Arabia that was built to honor the shape of the pen.
