Pocket Cameras Demystified - Panasonic Lumix DMCFH20K

By Fred Knowlton Jr.

There are a huge amount of cameras available for puchase today. They can range from the low priced $30 nearly disposable to the top of the line cameras which can cost as much as $25,000. When you are looking into getting a brand new digital camera you should first ask yourself what you are really trying to accomplish with it. Do you want to make money through photography? Will you be going on trip to the Bahamas? Or are you snapping photographs of you and your friends out Having fun?

I break down digital cameras into three different categories. There are differing names for them, but the most common are pocket, bridge, and DSLR cameras. Pocket cameras are the most common because they are the easiest to use, are normally inexpensive and give the user the best bang for their buck, with the others being for the more advanced user. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH20K is a member of the point and shoot family of digtial cameras. These are the entry level consumer model of cameras available today. They are also the types which you will see normal folks snapping photos with at weddings, family gatherings, or for other regular every day events.

Likely the best of reasons to invest in a point and shoot digital camera is that it does not require a college degree in photo-journalism to get one of them to do what it needs to. Remove it from the box, power it up, point it at what you want to take picture of and let it rip! With a camera similar to the DMC-FH20K it really is that simple.

Amateur photographers get a lot of additional benefits when choosing to order a point and shoot digital camera. Buying a point and shoot camera will not compel you to take out a loan using your house title as collateral. Because most of them actually will have telescoping lens mechanisms they are more durable than some of the DSLR digital cameras whose removable lenses can be easily broken. There is almost zero learning curve in becoming proficient with the device. These cameras are more than adequate when wanting to print out small photos or upload images to the internet.

Pocket cameras also have their downsides. One such issue with them is that they do not record rapid movement well at all. If you attempt to photograph a running child, or a diving bird, you will likely be disappointed with the result. If you are looking to take images of rapidly moving objects you would likely be better off purchasing a bridge camera which will cost anywhere from $400 to $1000

Photography is a great hobby to pick up. I personally love going into the woods on my parent's ranch and taking photographs of wildlife and anything that catches my attention. If you are interested in photography and do not want to invest a great deal of money into a hobby that you might just be interested in trying out, a pocket camera like the Lumix DMC-FH20K makes for a great start.
