How to Learn Japanese - 5 Tips

By Debra C. Appleton

There is a motive that studying Japanese is so popular. Its complexity, its openness to incorporating words from other languages (gairaigo), and its association with one of the world's strongest economies makes it an excellent selection for foreign language study. I have found five guidelines that any scholar of the language ought to follow.

My path to studying Japanese began in 1989, first in college and later while living in various Japanese cities. I have done translations, critiques and even given lectures in Japanese, so I consider myself to be fairly data of the subject. My expertise stretches from philosophical works to the mundane daily communications. And yet, I do know there may be always another level to be reached and I'm far from mastery.

These are a few of the tricks I exploit all the time in my learning progression:

Trick 1: It is advisable use flashcards. Nothing will assist you memorize faster.

Twenty years ago, I often simply used these of the paper selection which might be bound by a metallic ring. This is a fine choice. If you will get your fingers on some flashcards that work on your PC, that could be a better route to take. With these, you don't just get the words, but also you are treated to photos of what the phrase means.

Trick 2: Grasp the basics first, then throw out the rule book: With any language studying process, it's worthwhile to begin from the beginning. Just like with writing English, proper sentence structure is vital, and it will get more complicated whenever you incorporate the numerous Japanese character units, including kanji, hiragana, katakana, and romajii. Though once your reading at a remedial level, throw the guide away. When you learned English you weren't glued to rule book. Only by repeatedly using your Japanese are you going to make any monumental progress.

Trick 3: It is essential that you just read every day, and in such a way which you can hear it: Read aloud every day. This will interact your entire brain. Sure you could be used to reading to yourself, but right now, you aren't just reading, you are attempting to learn a brand new language. This will help your talking skills as well. I use both fiction and educational books for my studies.

Trick 4: Practice your skill with others: No two people will say the whole lot the very same way. Not only do people have different vocabularies, additionally they have different tones and even cadence than one another. The more dialog companions you will have the better. Be positive that your conversation partners are of different ages, genders and professions. If you wouldn't have every day entry to native Japanese speakers, watch Japanese videos online. Try any of the online video sites.

Trick 5: Write a little day by day: I have always kept a day by day log of my activities, written in Japanese. Or, get a Japanese pen pal: you might agree to divide your time between writing your native language and Japanese. Either way, writing in Japanese on a daily basis, even only a few sentences, will contribute tremendously to both your studying and speaking ability.

Due to the advanced nature of the language, you may always be learning something new. This makes studying Japanese an important pursuit that can provide a lifetime of enjoyment.
